#3: Melanie Kurdys - A Blueprint for CLOSING the U.S. Department of Education
My guest Melanie Kurdys and I discuss School Choice options like charter schools, vouchers, Title 1 portability, and education savings accounts proposed nationwide to shift from government-controlled education. Despite these options, government regulation persists, limiting genuine choice. We also explore a 1980 court case where Hillsdale College was subject to government regulation for accepting students receiving government funds, affirmed by the US Supreme Court. Melanie Kurdys is an accomplished business person, an educator and researcher, an education activist and a mother of three adult children and 8 grandchildren. Her mathematics degree from the University of Michigan enabled her to work for IBM, AT&T and Authur Young, among others. Melanie was also an active school volunteer and in-school math tutor in Louisiana, California, Georgia and Michigan. She was elected to her local school board and ran for Michigan State Board of Education in 2012. As co-founder of Stop Common Core in Michigan, Melanie continues to be a volunteer education advocate for parents, teachers and importantly, kids.
